Sex Ed. 101 by Anna Claire B.
The Montgomery County idea of making a condom video for sex education is brilliant! Although there have been speculations as to whether or not the video is professional enough or should be shown at all, I believe this is a great way to expose teenagers to the right way of practicing safe sex. "
In both versions of the video, the narrator emphasizes that abstinence is most effective way to avoid pregnancy and the contraction of a sexually transmitted disease." Although I agree with the board of education, with the society children have been raised in today, sex is conceived as a normal act of lust instead of as passion and true love.
The condom video is a great way to inform teenagers of safe sex. I believe that teenagers are going to have sex regardless, they need to be informed. Coming from a public school, I was very exposed to this issue. I had a sex ed class in eight grade that neglected to inform me about actual sex. It only taught me about puberty, changes in the body, and a few stages of love. I believe this can cause misconceptions for young children which causes them to make mistakes down the road. My last two years I went to a private Christian high school. Because it was a Christian school, the curriculum was much stricter and did not expose the students to sexual education. By graduation, I knew of one girl out of 23 that had an abortion in my grade. Although that doesn't sound like a lot, many students in my grade where morally grounded and had chosen abstinence.
Betsy Brown, director of the Montgomery County school system's department of curriculum and instructed, believes the first video was "more of an entertainment style". Also, Michelle Turner, president of CRC, states that the new video is not like MTV but more factual. If the use of condoms is going to be taught in schools, it should be be done in a professional manner. Teachers should follow the lessin plan ensuring everything is taught. Too many children are carrying children of their own or aborting them. I myself am adopted, and my birth mother was nineteen who probably was not practicing safe sex. If a child believes they are mature enough to have sex, they must be mature enough to know how to utilize a condom properly and take responsibly for their actions.
